In the South Texas Archives at the Jernigan Library on the Texas A&M University – Kingsville campus there is a wondrous little document titled Annual Report of the St. Louis, Brownsville & Mexico Railway Company for the Year Ending June 30, 1907. This is just what the name implies, an annual report of the financial condition of the railway. Things were looking pretty good in 1907. The Net Income for the year was $175,013.08. When this company was sold to Frisco Lines in 1910, the initial investors saw a 75% return on their investment.
This report contains a lot of interesting tidbits of data. It shows how much money was spent on the telegraph system for the year, $9,514.87. The number of passengers carried earning revenue was 113,122 that year. The total freight traffic that earned revenue was 277,734 tons. The average number of passenger cars per train mile was 3.57. The average number of freight cars per train mile was 16.80.
The equipment roster might be the most interesting bit of information of all. There were 24 locomotives, 29 cars in the passenger service, 722 freight cars, and 20 cars in company service of which 13 were cabooses. Here are the statistics on the locomotives by engine number:
